Graduate Student Employee Health Benefits
All full-time students must have health insurance coverage at all times, without exception. Stony Brook offers a health insurance plan that is automatically billed at the beginning of each semester. Graduate student employees, however, are eligible for insurance coverage from their employer.

Students employed as Graduate or Teaching Assistants are eligible for coverage under the SUNY Student Employee Health Plan (SEHP).
Research Project Assistants, Senior Research Aides, and Project Instructional Assistants are eligible for coverage under the Research Foundation plan.
Graduate student employees who choose to enroll in one of these plans can waive the mandatory health insurance fee in SOLAR. Please follow the Student Health Insurance Waiver Instructions. Be sure to submit by September 15th of EACH academic year you wish to waive coverage. If you are an incoming student beginning in the Spring semester, please submit a waiver by February 15th.
