Dissertation Title: Distinct Voices in 20th Century Vocal Music
Ju Hyeon Han is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in the Department of Music. Her final vocal recital and the accompanying paper examine five 20th-century composers of vocal music (Berg, Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Crumb, and Canteloube) who found ways to express their individuality in distinctive and original ways, without necessarily following the modernist impulse to break down tonality (i.e. the hierarchical scheme of organizing musical pitches that had governed Western composition since around 1700).
