Inter-University Doctoral Consortium

New York CityFor over 30 years the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium (IUDC) has offered eligible doctoral students in the arts and sciences the opportunity to take graduate courses not offered at their home institution at distinguished universities throughout the greater New York area.  The Graduate School of Stony Brook University joined this consortium in 2002.  Students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences are eligible to participate in this program.

Eligibility

The IUDC is open to doctoral students in good academic standing who have (1) completed at least one academic year of full-time study and (2) are currently matriculated in a PhD program in the arts and sciences. Terminal masters students and doctoral students not enrolled in the participating schools or divisions are ineligible.

All students enrolling in the program are required to be fully vaccinated or provide documentation of religious or medical exemption. Proof of vaccination must be uploaded to the host school's portal.

Interested students should first contact their Graduate Program Director.

Tuition and Financial Assistance from GSO 

Tuition is calculated by and paid to Stony Brook University only. Additional charges may be assessed by host institutions for lab fees, if applicable.

The Graduate Student Organization offers partial reimbursement for travel costs on the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) between Stony Brook and Manhattan for graduate students enrolled in courses offered by the IUDC or any Stony Brook University course that regularly meets in NYC. 

Registration Instructions for SBU Students 

Stony Brook University students are limited to a total of 3 courses through the IUDC program per academic year (fall and spring) and a maximum of 2 courses per fall and spring semester.

  4. Host School Dean / IUDC Coordinator
  • Submit form to SBU IUDC Coordinator within the registration deadline and enroll on SOLAR in a consortium "hold" course labeled IDC 600.  Courses at host institution must be A-F graded and match the number of credits listed for IDC 600 on SOLAR.
  • Full-time enrollment at Stony Brook is at least 9 credits including enrollment in IDC 600.  Enrollment in excess of 9 credits likely will lead to personal financial liability because graduate tuition scholarships are limited to 9 credits.
  • Submit form to host school's IUDC Coordinator and determine registration procedures at that institution.  If you need to drop your IUDC course, please be sure to drop both the consortium "hold" course at SBU as well as the real course at the host school.
  • Check with IUDC Coordinator about grade distribution at the end of the semester and be aware of all policies and procedures for courses at the host institution.

Registration Instructions for SBU Visitors

  3. SBU Course Instructor (Email with explicit permission will be accepted in lieu of physical signature)
  4. SBU IUDC Coordinator – Sr. Assistant Dean, Melissa Jordan
  • The form can be dropped off at the Graduate School or emailed to the SBU IUDC Coordinator.
  • Enrollment and registration processing will take 2-3 days and then an SBU ID number and instructions will be sent to the email submitted.  Registration must be complete in the first 10 days of classes.  To drop a course, please contact the SBU IUDC Coordinator within the first two weeks of the term to avoid a penalty grade of "W."
  • Grades will be sent to the home institution about three weeks after the end of term.  Incompletes must be resolved one semester from the end of the term in which you took the course.
